Managing industrial wastewater has become a matter of grave concern in recent years. Industries, including pharmaceutical, manufacturing, dairy, to textiles they generate a large volume of wastewater that needs to be removed before discharge. This is when common effluent treatment plants (CETP) come into play. These are centralized facilities that treat effluents from industries to meet the discharge meet environmental standards before being released into water bodies.
Significance of Common Effluent Treatment Plant
CETP Full Form: A common effluent treatment plant (CETP) is centralized treatment facility designed to treat wastewater coming from multiple industries. Individual ETPs may not be feasible for many industries due to space constraints and high operating costs. This is why, due to the many common effluent treatment plant advantages, it is a sustainable option. CETP are a cost-effective solution to treat and manage effluent wastewater that can be safely discharged into the environment or for other uses.
How the CETP Process Works
The common effluent treatment plant uses a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes to treat effluents.

Stage 1: Preliminary Treatment
➤ Screening & Debris Removal: This involves the removal of larger solids, sand, plastic & other substances.
➤ Equalization Tank: It aims to balance the variation in flow and volume of pollutants.
➤ Removing Oil & Grease: It separates oil and grease from wastewater.
Stage 2: Primary Treatment
➤ Flocculation & Coagulation: Chemical coagulants are added to get rid of suspended particles.
➤ Primary Clarification: The settled particles and sludge are removed.
Stage 3: Secondary Treatment
➤ Aeration Tank: Promotes aerobic bacteria growth to digest organic matter.
➤ Sludge Handling: The sludge generated is thickened, dewatered and disposed of safely.
Stage 4: Tertiary Treatment
Advanced treatment methods like filtration, activated carbon adsorption or membrane filtration are used to purify the treated water.
